    You start with three Notches and can find more throughout Hollow Knight.

    There are 45 Charms in total, but only 40 can be held at once as 5 can be replaced.

    You can equip a Charm without enough Notches by attempting it five times, but you will become Overcharmed.

    While Overcharmed, your health bar gains a purple aura, and you take double damage.

Tips
  • The SOUL meter, located in the top left of the HUD (Heads-Up Display), fills with white energy gained from hitting enemies and Soul Totems, and is used for spells.
  • You can equip a Charm without the necessary Notches by trying five times, which will make you Overcharmed, doubling damage taken.

  • Wayward Compass: Requires 1 Notch. Shows your location on the map (minimap (the small circular map in the bottom-left corner of your screen)). Buy from Iselda in Dirtmouth for 220 Geo.
  • Gathering Swarm: Requires 1 Notch. Collects dropped Geo, preventing loss. Buy from Sly in Dirtmouth for 300 Geo.
  • Stalwart Shell: Requires 2 Notches. Increases invincibility duration after being hit to 2 seconds. Buy from Sly in Dirtmouth for 200 Geo.
  • Soul Catcher: Requires 2 Notches. Gain an additional +3% SOUL with each hit. Found at the end of the Ancestral Mound after killing the Elder Baldur.
  • Shaman Stone: Requires 3 Notches. Increases the damage, size, and hitbox of spells. Buy from Salubra in Forgotten Crossroads for 220 Geo.
  • Dashmaster: Requires 2 Notches. Halves Dash cooldown and allows downward Dash. Found beneath a statue in the Fungal Wastes, down from the Mantis Village.
  • Fragile Heart: Requires 2 Notches. Adds two masks of health. Buy from Leg Eater in Fungal Wastes for 350 Geo; repair for 200 Geo if broken.
  • Fragile Greed: Requires 2 Notches. Enemies drop more Geo. Buy from Leg Eater in Fungal Wastes for 250 Geo; repair for 150 Geo if broken.
  • Fragile Strength: Requires 3 Notches. Increases Nail strength. Buy from Leg Eater in Fungal Wastes for 600 Geo; repair for 350 Geo if broken.
  • Steady Body: Requires 1 Notch. Knight won’t get pushed back after attacking. Buy from Salubra in Forgotten Crossroads for 120 Geo.
  • Longnail: Requires 2 Notches. Increases Nail range. Buy from Salubra in Forgotten Crossroads for 300 Geo.
  • Mark of Pride: Requires 3 Notches. Increases Nail range more than Longnail. Found in Mantis Village in a chest after defeating the Mantis Lords.
  • Fury of the Fallen: Requires 2 Notches. Dramatically increases Nail strength when on one mask of health. Found in King’s Pass in a chest behind a cave full of spikes.
  • Thorns of Agony: Requires 1 Notch. Deals damage to nearby enemies when the Knight takes damage. Found in Greenpath beyond thorns; Mothwing Cloak is needed to reach it.
  • Quick Focus: Requires 3 Notches. Allows the Focus ability to be used twice as fast. Buy from Salubra in Forgotten Crossroads for 800 Geo.
  • Deep Focus: Requires 4 Notches. Allows Focus to heal 2 masks of health but slows the ability speed. Found in Crystal Peak after breaking a fake wall; Crystal Heart is needed to get to it.
  • Lifeblood Heart: Requires 2 Notches. Adds 2 Lifeblood masks after resting on a bench. Buy from Salubra in Forgotten Crossroads for 250 Geo.
  • Spore Shroom: Requires 1 Notch. Releases a spore cloud after using Focus that deals damage. Found in Fungal Wastes; Mantis Claw is needed to reach it.
  • Dreamshield: Requires 3 Notches. Creates a protective shield that follows the Knight. Found in Resting Grounds behind a fake wall under the Seer’s room.

Spells & Abilities

SOUL is the white energy gained by hitting enemies and Soul Totems, visible as a circular meter on the HUD that fills with white liquid, resembling a mask when full. SOUL is needed to cast spells.
