Night in the Woods is a story-rich, atmospheric adventure game where you play as Mae Borowski, a college dropout returning to her decaying hometown of Possum Springs. You'll spend your days exploring familiar locations, hanging out with your friends Gregg, Bea, and Angus, and uncovering the town's unsettling, dark secrets. It's a game about personal crises, friendship, and the creeping dread beneath the surface of everyday life.
This guide is here to help you navigate every day of Mae's chaotic return. We'll cover walkthroughs for each day, offer tips on maximizing your exploration of Possum Springs, and provide advice for strengthening your friendships. Whether you're trying to manage Mae's personal struggles or unravel the town's central mystery, this guide will help you see everything Night in the Woods has to offer.
Walkthrough
A comprehensive walkthrough for Night in the Woods, detailing every section, scene, missable notebook sketch, trophy, and achievement. Includes interactive object tables and dreamscape guidance.
This section is a complete walkthrough for Night In The Woods, detailing every section and scene in the game. While it does tell you when a missable Notebook sketch is coming up, if you are only looking for the sketches I recommend checking the 100% Notebook Sketch section of the guide. This walkthrough will also cover most of the possible trophies and achievements as they come up, but for full details please check out the Trophy Guide section.
This walkthrough is meant to be completely comprehensive in nature. In each section, I have tables that list every single object you can interact with and some notes about the interaction. If you can get a notebook sketch or trophy from doing so, it is noted here. If not, it will just be some details about the interaction. Obviously, you do not need to interact with every single object in the game, and if you're interested in only getting through the game then skip the tables entirely. The text under the tables details exactly what you need to do to advance the game, in addition to noting the most interesting interactions from the previous section. It is entirely up to you how you want to play the game, and you can skip nearly everything or talk to every single person you meet along the way.
Additionally, the game occasionally enters some dreamscapes where you need to summon four ghostly musicians by walking up to the spot where they are playing. This guide will detail how to find all of them, and also will provide pictures to show how to find some of the more tricky ones. There are also multiple times in this game where you have to choose which of your friends to hang out with. This will slightly change the ending of the game, but I will describe all of the scenes in case you only want to play the game through once.
If you notice any mistakes or any omissions, please do not hesitate to contact me. Thanks, and enjoy your stay in Possum Springs!

- Experiment with moving the analog stick during conversations to uncover more dialogue options.
- Pay attention to Mae's comments about the environment for hints about the world of Night in the Woods.
- The sequence of jumps in the woods requires continuous movement and quick successive jumps.
- The first Notebook Sketch is obtained after talking to your Dad.
- A second Notebook Sketch is obtained by playing Space Dragon on the guitar once.
- A third Notebook Sketch is obtained from the first conversation with Mom.
- A fourth Notebook Sketch is obtained from the final optional conversation with Mom.
Part I: Home Again
Welcome back to Possum Springs! This guide helps you explore your hometown, meet old friends like Gregg and Bea, and find all the missable Notebook Sketches in Part I.
Alright, so you're back in Possum Springs! This is where the real story kicks off. After you leave your house, you'll have some freedom to wander around town. Keep in mind, a lot of places are still blocked off for now – we'll unlock more areas in Part II. For this chapter, you can check out the area right around your house, some neighboring places just a screen over, and a couple of screens filled with storefronts. There's even an underground area accessible through a tunnel that connects to the storefront sections. You can totally just make a beeline for your destination, but trust me, there's a ton to see and plenty of folks to chat with. These interactions might not always seem clutch, but they really help build up Mae, Possum Springs, and her friends. Plus, you'll want to inspect certain things to snag some Notebook Sketches, so keep an eye out for those – I'll point out the missable ones!
This is also the part where you'll meet most of the main characters. Seriously, take your time and get to know everyone. Gregg, Angus, Bea, your mom and dad – they're all super important to the story and have some funny or interesting things to say if you bother to talk to them. What's the point of coming home if you're not gonna catch up with your old pals and family, right?
Area Overview
- Location: Outside Your House
- Inspect: Construction. Apparently, half the town is shut down because of it. Saves on the animation budget, I guess.
- Talk: Mr. Twigmeyer. Your neighbor seems like a bit of a jerk.
- Location: Outside Bea's House
- Inspect: Statue. You'll find out this is where your friend Bea lives. Inspect the statue three times to get a Notebook Sketch.
- Talk: Selmers. She's the grumpy bear right by the start of the screen. Chat with her to find out why she's so sour.
- Talk: Crow. This guy isn't much of a talker.
- Talk: Mr. Chazokov. Your old teacher! He'll invite you over to his roof to stargaze later this week.
- Talk: Harleys. These three kids you saw earlier are playing cops and… something.
- Talk: Danny. This cat on the left side of the screen is recently unemployed and pretty bummed about it.
- Location: Storefronts, Screen 1
- Enter: Tunnel. This leads to the underground area, on the right side.
- Grab: Message Board. You can check out a missing poster for Casey Hartley, a notice for Harfest, and a ball of yarn. Go ahead and play with the yarn – you know you want to.
- Inspect: Barricade. Head up the stairs on the right to find a barricade blocking the path to the church. Inspecting it gets you a new Notebook Sketch.
- Talk: Lori M. This mouse next to the statue mentions an incident that earned you the nickname "killer." Sounds juicy!
- Inspect: War Monument. They have these all over town. After you look at it, Mae will add a "Big Skeleton" Notebook Sketch to your book.
- Location: Underground
- Inspect: Tunnel. Go all the way to the right, and Mae will explain how this place flooded.
- Talk: Pierogi Stand. The guy won't sell to you because you apparently stole from him years ago. Oops.
- Grab: Pretzels. The grab icon shows up, but Mae won't actually steal one. What a saint.
- Talk: Teens. They're unimpressed that you can't buy booze and don't have a car. Typical teenagers.
- Location: Storefronts, Screen 2
- Inspect: Video Outpost "Too" Sign. Mae has some thoughts on the grammar here. Can't help you there, sorry!
- Enter: Tunnel. This leads to the underground area, on the left side.
- Talk: Workers. They're hanging out by Miller's and are just happy work is over.
- Enter: Snack Falcon. This is your destination. Head inside when you're done exploring.
- Inspect: Abandoned Food Donkey. Go to the far left of the screen, and Mae will comment on this abandoned Food Donkey. You can't actually go there, though.
Feel free to explore the street between your house and the Snack Falcon. You might see a squirrel jump on your mailbox and then climb the tree above it. If you follow it, you can actually climb onto some telephone wires. Follow those wires to the left, and you'll enter a new screen. Once you do, Mae will draw the houses there for your notebook. Keep going along the wires until you reach a red building with a statue in the middle. Jump on the window to the right of the statue, and inspect it three times – you'll get another notebook entry! You can head back down to the street either by retracing your steps or by falling off where the wires end on the left. There are lots of people to talk to on your way to the Snack Falcon, but none of them are strictly required.
Keep going past this screen, and you'll hit the first part of the street with all the storefronts. You can take the tunnel down to check out the underground area, but first, head up the stairs. There's a barricade here blocking the path to the church; inspecting it will get you another notebook entry. Continue left until you see a statue – it's some kind of war memorial. Inspect it a couple of times, and Mae will sketch something for your notebook again. Go one more screen to the left, and the Snack Falcon will be there among the other shops. Head inside once you've explored everything you want to. Walk towards the counter, and Gregg will immediately freak out when he sees you. He's happy to see you, though!
Part II: Weird Autumn
Navigate Night in the Woods' "Weird Autumn" chapter with our comprehensive guide. Uncover all Notebook Sketches, explore new areas, and make key story choices.
This part of the game stops being polite and starts getting real. In this chapter, you will delve deeper into Mae's relationships with her friends and family, leading to some funny and extremely not funny scenes. A lot of the town will be opened up by the end of this chapter, so there is a ton to see and do. You can breed an entire nest of rats, find a bunch of Dusk Stars, and of course bury yourself in Demontower if you're in the mood for a more old-school gaming experience. This guide will help you make sure you don't miss anything, but feel free to go at your own pace and putz around town if you want.
Additionally, this is the chapter where you will have some choices about how the story unfolds. At three different points, you will be given the option of hanging out with Gregg or with Bea. You can hang out with one and only one of them, and whoever you don't hang out with, you just won't have a scene with. You can mix and match, so you don't need to hang out with the same person all three times. The ending will be somewhat different depending on which of these two you hung out with more, so make sure you pick whoever you prefer twice during this chapter.
Of course, if you are not interested in seeing everything there is to see in town, you can just immediately go to whichever character it is you need to talk to in order to move to the next scene and bypass all of the extraneous stuff. The extraneous stuff is some of the most fun stuff, but play however you want to play.
Area Overview
| Location | Action | Object | Notes |
| Your House, Your Room | Inspect | Guitar | Can now select "Go Get Dead, Angel Face", but Mae will refuse to play it out of embarrassment. |
| Your House, Your Room | Inspect | Computer | New messages from chattrBox, Bea, and Gregg. |
| Your House, Second Floor | Inspect | Portrait | Still looking good, younger you. |
| Your House, Second Floor | Inspect | Clock | Mae ponders luxury items for a bit. |
| Your House, Second Floor | Inspect | Books | Reminisce about your grandfather. You'll also find a secret inscription. "Left 45, Right 100, Left 22, Left 90, Right 15". You'll get a Notebook Sketch for inspecting the shelf. |
| Your House, First Floor | Talk | Mom | She lets you know the power lines and church steps have been repaired. You'll get an "EFF THE COPS" Notebook Sketch for talking to her. It isn't as tough as it sounds. |
| Outside Your House | Inspect | Top Of Pole | If you climb up to the power lines in front of your house, you can jump on top of the pole directly in front of your house. You need to be right on top of the wooden part, and then you can inspect it three times for Mae to tell you a story about the flood. |
| Outside Bea's House | Talk | Selmers | Selmers is the name of the lady on the stoop as soon as you enter this screen. Talk to her and then tell her you want to hear her poetry to get another Notebook Sketch. |
| Outside Bea's House | Talk | Mr. Chazokov | He'll be up on the roof of the house on the right of the screen. Use the power lines of the previous screen to get up to the building on the far left, then jump from rooftop to rooftop to get to the building on the right. Help him find the two Dusk Stars to get two new Notebook Sketches. |
| Outside Bea's House | Talk | Crow | The crow is now unhappy that you're on his porch and Mr. Chazokov is up on the roof next door. |
| Storefronts, Screen 1 | Enter | Market House | You can talk to both Bea and her co-worker inside here. |
| Storefronts, Screen 1 | Inspect | War Monument | Apparently ten of Mae's classmates went off and joined the army to pay for college. |
| Storefronts, Screen 1 | Inspect | Stairs | If you go up the stairs above the tunnel, you can check and see that construction is done. You can move on to the church. |
| Storefronts, Screen 1 | Inspect | Weather Station | Construction on the streetlight is also done. Climb up halfway on the stairs and you can jump over on the streetlight. Jump up on the first roof ledge you can, then jump on the roof ledge to the right of it. From here you can actually jump on the roof of the first building and inspect the Weather Station on top of it. If you jump on the right side of the wheel for long enough, the base will open up and a little package will fly out. |
| Storefronts, Screen 1 | Talk | Lori M. | That mouse from before is up on one of the roofs. Follow the path to the aforementioned weather station but then jump on the chimney to get to the adjacent roof. Follow the power line up here to the next building, and jump on top of the orange wet floor bucket to get to the roof of the next building. Lori M. is up here, and you can talk about where she lives if you want. |
| Storefronts, Screen 1 | Inspect | Roof Cat | To the right of Lori M. is a taller building. There is a cat up on the very top of the roof of this building, outside your viewpoint from here. It is a bit difficult to get up to, but what I did was start to the right of the "Piso Mojado" bucket on the level below Lori. Get a running start, and jump onto the "Piso Mojado" bucket. Keep moving and jump from that bucket to the roof Lori M. is on, then jump from here to the next level of the larger building. You'll need to get the extra elevation from the moving jump on the last hop, so make sure you plan out the jump accordingly. As soon as you jump on the roof Lori is on, begin pushing back to the right instead of left to get up on the roof. You want to jump on sort of the right edge of the bucket at first to get this to work, otherwise you won't have enough space to maneuver back around. Once you're finally up here you can inspect the cat on the roof and you'll get the "Roof Cat" Notebook Sketch. |
| Storefronts, Screen 1 | Enter | Window | To the right of Lori M. is a taller building. You want to drop down to the level below the "Piso Mojado" sign. There is a slightly ajar window down here. Interact with it to open it all the way. You can climb inside after. |
| Storefronts, Screen 1 | Inspect | Weather Station B | If you looked at the previous weather station, you can actually look at this one. To the left |
