Hey there! So, you've made it to the end of the guide, or maybe you're just curious about where all this info came from. It's pretty cool that you're digging into this! Honestly, nobody becomes a Dragon Quest expert overnight – myself included. Before diving deep into any DQ game, I always do a ton of research. That means hitting up various FAQs on GameFAQs, poring over maps, and checking out equipment details. A lot of what you've read here is from my own experiences and a fair bit of trial-and-error, but the real backbone of this guide comes from some awesome online resources.
It’s tough to pinpoint *exactly* where every single piece of info originated, but a few key places really helped shape this guide:
- Woodus Dragon's Den: Seriously, this place is a goldmine! It's my go-to for maps and pretty much anything else related to Dragon Quest. If you're a fan, you'll love it.
- [Website Name 1]: I used this site quite a bit to help put together a bunch of the tables you've seen throughout the guide. Super helpful for organizing all that data!
- [Website Name 2]: Similar to the above, this website was instrumental in compiling several of the tables. It really streamlines the process of getting that information to you.
- [Forum Name]: A big shout-out to everyone on the forums who took the time to answer my questions. This guide wouldn't be as complete without that community support.
And hey, a guide like this isn't a one-person job. If you've read through and thought,

Hey there! So, you've made it to the acknowledgements section of this Dragon Quest III guide. It's a bit different from the usual walkthrough stuff, but it's important to know where all this info comes from, right?
Honestly, no one (myself included!) becomes an expert overnight. I definitely didn't just play through Dragon Quest III and magically know everything. Before diving deep into any Dragon Quest game, I always do a ton of research. This usually involves digging through FAQs on GameFAQs, checking out maps, and looking up gear details on sites like Woodus' Dragon's Den. While I've certainly added my own experiences and figured some things out through trial and error, a huge chunk of what you'll find in this guide is thanks to these resources.
It's tough to pinpoint every single source, but here are some of the main inspirations:
- Woodus Dragon's Den: Seriously, this place is fantastic. It's my go-to for maps and pretty much anything else related to Dragon Quest. If you're a fan, you'll love it.
- [Unnamed Website 1]: I used this site quite a bit to help put together some of the tables you'll see scattered throughout the guide. Super helpful for organizing that kind of data.
- [Unnamed Website 2]: Similar to the one above, this website was also a big help in compiling several of the tables in the guide.
- [Unnamed Forum/Community]: A big shout-out to everyone on the forums who took the time to answer my questions. It's awesome when a community comes together like that!
And hey, a guide like this isn't a one-person job. If you ever feel like I've missed something, could explain something better, have a different strategy that works wonders, or anything else, please don't hesitate to reach out. My goal is to make this guide as helpful and easy to use as possible for all you players out there.

Walkthrough - Prologue
Begin your Dragon Quest III adventure! Learn how to set up your Hero, choose your language, difficulty, and more in this essential prologue guide.
Alright, let's get your Dragon Quest III adventure started! First things first, you'll need to pick a spot to save your progress. You get nine Adventure Logs to choose from, which is pretty handy. You can save on the other eight later on, so don't stress too much about this first choice.
After you've picked your log, the game's gonna ask you a few questions to set up your main character, the Hero:
First up, you'll name your Hero. Then, you'll choose their appearance: A = Male or B = Female. After that, pick your language – Japanese or English. You'll also decide if you want your objectives to show up on the map – just say Yes or No. Finally, you'll select your difficulty: Dracky (Easy), Dragon (Normal), or Draconian (Hard). This guide will be walking you through on the Dragon (Normal) difficulty.
Heads up: You can actually change all these settings later in the game, so don't worry if you second-guess yourself!
Oh, and a couple of notes from the NES version that might be different: you won't see that epic cutscene of Ortega fighting the Hydra, and you can't name your Hero 'Erdrick' or 'Loto'. Also, remember that all characters, including the Hero, have a gender, and female characters tend to get better equipment and personalities, plus there are slight starting stat differences. My party in this guide will be all female!
One last thing: you can tweak your Battle Message Speed, Music Volume, and SFX Volume anytime you want from the in-game menu.
Personality Quiz
Navigate Dragon Quest III's Personality Quiz! Learn how your answers shape your starting personality and discover the 45 possible outcomes. Get ready for your adventure!
Alright, so you're about to kick off your adventure in Dragon Quest III, and the very first thing you'll do is take a personality quiz. It all happens in a dream sequence, starting you off in a forest. Just head straight up to get to the next area with a waterfall. Keep pushing forward, and someone will start chatting with you. She's the one who'll put you through this quiz to figure out your starting personality.
The quiz itself has two main parts: the questions you answer, and then one of eight possible starting areas that your answers will lead you to. When she asks if you're ready, tell her Yes. Then, you'll need to give her your True Name and your Date of Birth (just the MM/DD part). After that, she'll ask you to confirm your Zodiac Sign based on that birthday.
Note: Don't stress too much about the name and birthday details for the quiz outcome itself. The main thing is you can't use any profanity or body part names for your True Name, so keep it clean!
Next up are the actual quiz questions, which are all Yes/No. You'll start with one of five possible questions, and your answer will determine which question comes next. This continues until you reach the end. Once you're done, you'll be zapped into one of eight different areas, and this location is what really sets your starting personality. I'll link a graphic below that shows the whole quiz flow.
Just so you know, there are a whopping 45 total Personalities you can end up with. As the Hero, you'll actually be able to pick from 32 of those, and two of them are specific to gender. If you happen to end up with a personality you're not thrilled about, don't worry too much! You can either restart the game right then and there, or you can keep playing and use special Personality Books or Accessories later on to change it up. For my own playthrough, I'm aiming for the Vamp Personality, which means I need to follow the route for
