Welcome to Paldea! In Pokémon Scarlet, you're aiming to become the Champion of this vibrant region. You'll explore an open world, train your Pokémon, and tackle three distinct storylines: Victory Road, Starfall Street, and Path of Legends. It's a classic Pokémon adventure with a fresh, open-world twist.

This guide is here to help you conquer every challenge. We'll cover everything from completing your Pokédex and building the best teams to mastering tough Tera Raid Battles. Stuck on a specific Gym Leader or need help navigating the treacherous Path of Legends? We've got you covered.

Start your adventure

Embark on your Pokémon Scarlet adventure! Choose your starter, battle rivals like Nemona and Arven, explore Paldea, and learn about Terastallization in this comprehensive guide.

Follow the story and the tutorials. At some point you may choose your first Pokémon partner. You spend some time with all the starter Pokémon before you make your choice.

You can choose one of the following Pokémon:

  • Sprigatito, the Grass Cat Pokémon
  • Fuecoco, the Fire Croc Pokémon
  • Quaxly, the Duckling Pokémon

Tip: Choose the Pokémon you like. There are plenty of Pokémon to catch in the wild, so do not feel limited by that.

After you choose your Pokémon, you can have your first rival battle with a girl named Nemona. (She chooses the starter that is weak against your starter Pokémon.) After the battle with Nemona, follow her and she teaches you how to catch a wild Pokémon.

You can take your time to explore the area. (If your Pokémon get tired, Nemona can heal them for you.) After that, continue with the story. You meet the Legendary Pokémon of your version (Koraidon in Pokémon Scarlet and Miraidon in Pokémon Violet). At the lighthouse, a boy named Arven challenges you to a Pokémon battle. He has one Pokémon (Skwovet). His Pokémon is Lv. 5 and it is a Normal-type Pokemon. After the battle, Arven gives you the Legendary Pokémon (that you can use as a mount later in the game).

Go to Los Platos, a small town nearby. Nemona gives you 5,000 League Points (LP) and Pokémon materials. You can connect with other players (local or online) using the Poké Portal option in the main menu. Head to Mesagoza, the big city up the hill.

At the gate of the big city, Nemona catches up to you. She challenges you to a battle. Nemona has a second Pokémon now. Her starter is Lv. 8. Her second Pokémon (Pawmi) is Lv. 9. It is an Electric-type Pokémon. Use Pokémon that are effective against Electric-type Pokémon, so Ground-type Pokémon (for example Wooper). Be careful with Pokémon that are weak against Electric-type Pokémon, so Flying-type and Water-type Pokémon.

When you explore the city, you meet Team Star. A Team Star Grunt challenges you to a battle. The grunt has one Pokémon (Shroodle) that is Lv. 8. It is a Poison- and Normal-type Pokémon. Use a Ground-, Psychic- or Fighting-type Pokémon. Be careful with Fairy- and Grass-type Pokémon. After the battle, Nemona gives you a Tera Orb. In you second battle with Team Star, you can Terastallize your Pokémon. This Team Star Grunt has also one Pokémon (Yungoos), a Normal-type Pokémon that is Lv. 9. Terastallize your Pokémon to win the battle.

The next destination is the academy. You get to introduce yourself during the first class. As for the answers to the questions, the answers have a minor influence on the dialogue, but no major influence on the story. After that, new classes become available to take. You can sign up for all kinds of classes at the desk in the entrance hall. Refer to section Classes for more details about the classes at the academy.

During your first days at the academy, possible goals and adventures that you can pursue become clear. The tutorial ends with an explanation of the Treasure Hunt event.

Author's note: I describe a recommended route in this walkthrough, but feel free to decide where you want to go. The recommended route is based on the levels of the Pokémon that you battle during the challenges.

I recommend to start at the first Gym. Refer to section Cortondo Gym.

Classes

Unlock all seven classes in Pokémon Scarlet! Learn how to pass midterms, finals, and get sweet rewards with this guide.

Alright, so you've probably noticed there are a bunch of classes you can take at the Academy in Pokémon Scarlet. Think of them as mini-games within the main game! There are seven different subjects you can dive into: Biology, Math, History, Languages, Battle Studies, Art, and Home Economics. Each one is a bit of a journey, with six regular lectures, and then a midterm and a final exam to really test your knowledge.

Don't stress too much about getting every single question right in the lectures – if you miss one, there's no penalty, and you can always go back and retake a class later if you feel like it. The real tests are the midterm and final exams. For the midterm, you'll need to get at least three questions correct to pass, and for the final, it's four correct answers. Nail these, and you'll snag some pretty sweet rewards!

How to Unlock Classes

Getting into these classes is pretty straightforward, but you'll need to meet a few conditions depending on the subject:

ClassProfessorUnlock conditions
BiologyMr. JacqComplete your introduction during the first class.
MathMs. TymeComplete your introduction during the first class.
HistoryMs. RaifortComplete the tutorials.
LanguagesMr. SalvatoreObtain two Gym Badges.
Battle StudiesMs. DendraComplete your introduction during the first class.
ArtMr. HasselObtain two Gym Badges.

How to Unlock More Lectures and Exams

As you progress through the game and earn Gym Badges, more of the class content will become available. It's a nice way to pace yourself and keep learning as you explore Paldea.

  • The third lecture for all classes will unlock after you get your third Gym Badge. Once you've finished that third lecture, the midterm exam for that class will also become available.
  • Keep going! After you snag your fifth Gym Badge, the fourth lecture for all classes will unlock. And just like before, taking the fourth lecture opens up the fifth lecture.
  • Finally, once you've earned your seventh Gym Badge, the sixth and final lecture for each class will unlock. Completing this last lecture will then make the final exam available.

How to Participate in Classes

Ready to hit the books? Just head to the entrance hall of the Academy and find the staffer at the front desk. Chat with them, and you'll get a prompt to select the class you want to join. Pick your subject, and you're good to go!
